COMMUNITY-MINDED young people have “graduated” from a fortnight-long summer school run by Oldham MP Debbie Abrahams.

Mrs Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, launched the Working for Your Community scheme — for 18 to 24-year-olds — to get participants ready for employment and introduce them to the world of politics.

She said: “It’s been a real pleasure to meet these motivated young people who have been really eager to learn more about politics and share in my passion for creating community-based action here in Oldham which can help tackle important local issues and shape all our futures.

“My young students were fantastic and I’d like to thank them for their enthusiasm which has been infectious and, by all accounts from the organisations that have helped us by providing work experience, they have really thrown themselves into the projects to which they have been assigned.”

Tim Mitchell, chief executive of local charity Positive Steps, provided a work placement for two students.

He said: “Seeing young people who are motivated to take action and get involved with helping their community is exactly what Oldham needs more of and they should be very proud.”
