Tesco boycott demo over Gaza

Reporter: ALEX CAREY
Date online: 04 August 2014

THE Clarksfield community turned out in force this weekend to urge people to boycott Tesco because it stocks Israeli goods.

More than 40 people protested outside Tesco Express on Lees Road — holding banners saying “boycott Tesco” and “free Gaza” as well as waving Palestine flags.

The peaceful, yet powerful, protest ran from 1 to 5pm on both Saturday and yesterday and continued to grow in numbers throughout.

People involved in the demonstration said this was not a political statement but a promotion of human rights — stating that they have grown concerned that Israeli products purchased by the supermarket could help fund weapons to attack Palestine.

Sonny Arstan, a Clarksfield resident said: “This is part of a national protest but we are showing that our community cares about what is happening in Gaza.

“By selling their produce Tesco is helping Israel fund the production of weapons and innocent people are being killed everyday. This has to stop.

“The protest today is to show people that they can make a difference. We’re not here to cause trouble; we just want to alert people to what is going on.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Like all major UK retailers, we sell some products that are sourced from Israel. We do this in line with the Government position on trade with Israel, and we mark all products clearly with the country of origin, so customers can make informed choices about what to buy.”

A number of residents expressed their concerns about the protest, stating that the mass presence was intimidating.

Rita Taylor said: “I feel for the elderly who rely on this shop and are being intimidated. This can’t carry on.”

And for the sake of a balanced argument, not taking one side or the other, where does the funding come from for the rockets that Hamas fires indiscriminantly on a regular basis into Israel?

Also, looking at the photo, would such a gathering not constitute an obstruction of the public highway, requiring the Police to move them on?

Isn't it amazing that we are seeing such ugly antisemitism cloaked as serious concern for the poor Gazan people who the world are suddenly so sorry for. It is good old-fashioned, age-old antisemitism cloaked as anti-Israel propoganda and "pro-Gazan" support against Israel who is taking legitimate action to protect her sovereignty against surrounding Islamist scum that the free world is struggling to contain.

I STAND WITH ISRAEL. I RESPECT THE ACTION ISRAEL TAKES. I DEPLORE THESE ANTISEMITES.

What a load of rubbish, Tesco pay the farmers not terrorists. There are much better ways to get involved in there help for Gaza.

My view:
1. If they feel this strongly go over there and help
2. I bet from today and in the past they continue to use the store, and
3. As for the statement “this was not a political statement but a promotion of human rights” they need to look at their “mother” country before spouting about human rights. Where they still stone women and set on fire all in the name of honour!!

I would dispute the peaceful protest, and we are not here to cause trouble comments, as my wife, who was working, had to drive through this raging mob, with people banging on her van windows and side panels. At that time there were a lot more than forty people present, with police in riot gear attempting to control them. My wife neither works for Tesco, nor shops there. And if you wish to make a peaceful protest..as stated you have the right not to buy any products importedfrom Isreal

Until we are all free, none of us are free!

This is an anti semitic protest against Jewish people, who Muslims want to slaughter.
There's no protest against Syrian Muslims slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Muslim, nor Lybia either. This is simply about Jews.

Makes me want shop in Tesco even more now!!!
This is a ridiculous protest organised by individuals who have an agenda and supported by those who haven't got a clue. Neither of which are prepared to see the full picture.

A lot worse is happening in Syria, and Iraq as a direct result of Western leaders interventions for their own ends, and I don't recall seeing many protests about the genocide going on there, with the West doing NOTHING to even try to stop it.

Not sure a demonstration blocking the pavement outside a small Tesco store in a mixed community in Oldham will have any effect on Israel. Why not demand a recall of parliament and the imposition of sanctions on the warmongering Israelis?

Why are these people not protsting over Iraq and what is going on there just a thought

Will those people who call for a boycott of Israeli goods and services give up their mobile phone, their desktop and laptop computers, the internet etc etc all of which run on technology developed in Israel and from which Israel earns more than it does from fruit and veg? Unlikely. Most of those who call for BDS lack the integrity to do so.

"a promotion of human rights" eh? Maybe this mob could also demonstrate against the action of the Taliban? Now that would be a welcome sight.

What country are we in here?

Just who do this lot think they are disrupting peoples lives?

Bet they all nipped in Tesco today for there shopping.

Hypocrites.

I am absolutely appalled at some of the comments that have been posted.
How anyone can "RESPECT THE ACTION ISRAEL TAKES." beggars belief. Over 1500 people, (the vast majority of them innocent civilians), murdered.

"they need to look at their “mother” country before spouting about human rights. Where they still stone women and set on fire all in the name of honour!!" I was born and bred in Oldham. Lived here all my life, wasn't aware that we stoned and burned women here.

It seems a bit rich for them to justify their assembly as being in promotion of human rights when ISIS (a Muslim organisation) is beheading non-Muslims & forcing Christians to leave their ancient homelands - Human Rights? I happen to think that the situation re Gaza is appalling, but I also reject the implied anti-semitism of these 'protests'. And when can we expect forced conversions in Europe?

The entire protest was peaceful, please stop trying to stir up trouble and making lies up about 'raging mob, banging on windows'. Its pathetic.

It was pleasing to see speakers from different communities, races and backgrounds united as one speaking up against injustice.

For your information, there were jewish people at the protest so lets leave out the 'anti-semitism' card.

peace out.

Boycotting Tesco? Why? There are human rights abuses in Syria, people killed in the most atrocious ways, this is a conflict caused by Hamas. Peaceful protest is one thing, insulting people who disagree with your world view is another.

I was there. There was no intimidation. These lads were very well behaved. Mass presences will always seem intimidating to some.
As for “I feel for the elderly who rely on this shop and are being intimidated. This can’t carry on”, every elderly walking past was assisted to wherever they were going. There were no complaints.
As for windows being banged on thats just nonsense.
There was security and police presence throughout.
standing up for innocent killings cannot be anti semitic.

"THE Clarksfield community turned out in force this weekend to urge people to boycott Tesco because it stocks Israeli goods"

Can we therefore assume that members of said community who happen to be employed at the three Tesco stores in the region will have handed in their notices.

Hope everyone is well on this thread. Just though I'd share my thoughts

Zionism is a disgrace to the world and the Jewish faith, just because your against Zionism doesn't mean you're anti-Semitic. There are many Jewish people who are against the terrorism conducted by the Zionist regime of Israel, even some Israelis. So I don't understand how your argument holds The Borg. Either its purely ignorance or you just using anti-semitism as a shield against the crimes and terrorism committed by Israel

Fitton Hill, yes you're right, it is most often the innocent who suffer. I would rather someone loose their income, property than someone losing their lives, would you agree? The people are fed up and diplomacy aint working. These two faced puppet politicians have not gotten Palestinians the justice they deserve after all these decades and have no intention of doing so until they are free from campaign dollars from Zionist lobbeys.

Firstly, in response to the guy known as best footie, your argument is wrong, AND GO LEARN what Antisemitism is. Not one person in the protest made any Anti-Semitic comments. This was a peaceful protest to create awareness of the massacre in Gaza. The purpose behind boycotting Tesco was, that they fund the arms and weaponry in Israel which is killing innocent civilians including a vast majority of children. Also, there was no riot police Police agreed it was a peaceful protest

"Until we are all free, none of us are free!"......good grief, Shaun......one of these days you will put forward a relevant argument instead of some Utopian soundbite.

Following on from Discoden's point....I wonder how many arrest's were made?

and exactly how many of this mob are from israel ? none ! these people are local muslims who also use this store. how very hypocritacal.also how on earth is this well organised gathering by one section of people not considered as incitement to public disorder ? the tesco staff must have felt threatened by the crowd otherwise the store wouldn't have shut . so why didn't the police stop this farcical gathering ? mustn't upset those who contribute so much to our peaceful society ,must we ?

To the Borge, wer do the israelies get the multi billion pound rockets tanks jet fighters defence systems armour weaponry, shouldn't u be asking that question? Who funds them Britain America ? Hamas home made rockets hardly anything to worry about when up against that, wake up!

If people are being anti-Semitic, why are the Jews themselves in this country marching to support Gaza? Also The Borg who do you think funds Israel's heavy artillery - the US maybe?
Any children, from which ever side to die is deplorable, but many more Palestinian children have died than soldiers - fact.
The demonstration was a small way of getting people to take notice. Perhaps more demonstrations nationwide may help in a small way - unable to go out there billy1830. Good on those people!

It strange how how many of the people who were stood outside Lees Rd Express, waving placards stating "boycott Tesco" and vowing never set foot in the company's shops' again, were back in the later back in the store fighting over stock from reduced price aisle.

It seems that the price of high moral values is greatly reduced when there is a bargain to be had !!!!!!

Yes they were intimidating, they were all blocking the entrance to get in the Tesco store. What goes on in Gaza has nothing to do with English people. It's amazing when they all want us to back their dispute when it suits them. We don't like the burka but we have to put up with it. These demonstrations are not wanted or needed in this country and should not be tolerated. This one was meant to be peaceful, the next one may not be. If you don't like it go over to Gaza and demonstrate there.

It would be nice to know that these same people have got on a plane to Gaza to try and persuade their fellow Muslims i.e. Hamas that there effort is futile as people still shop at Tescos. And while they are at it nip over to syria and have a word with their brothers there--assuming Tescos buys from that country as well.

I agree, Danny...WAKE UP and get your facts right!!! Home made rockets...really???
Hamas gets it's arms from Syria who in turn gets them from Russia in return for use of Syria's Mediterranean ports. Not forgetting Iran is also a major supporter of Hamas.

Now, how many of you who condemn Israel will come on this message board to condemn ISIS/Sunni Muslims who have brutally murdered nearly 6000 and displaced over a million?

..speak up for ALL innocents!!!

After speaking with the AID agencies like British Red Cross earlier this week, they r confirming that no AID is getting through, never mind ROCKETS, and the situation is worse than we r being told, hundreds of thousands of people either injured murdered or displaced, mainly children. it is extremely sad that people can b so violently ignorant. Humanitarian efforts to (once called) Palestine have been curtailed & controlled ever since 1948, there is a 40 foot wall 3 sides of GAZA. largest prison

BTW no arrests were made on the demonstrations it was all very peaceful.

OK iqi if you're so bothered about human rights, then why aren't you protesting about the ISIS outrages? More people are killed by ISIS in one day than Israel yet you don't bother.
Could it be that you don't care because the people doing the killing are Muslims?
Today we find that the latest 'attack' near a UN school has been staged, by Hamas planting bodies of dead children to outrage world opinion.
ISIS does it for real !

They don't seem to mind Egyptian food being sold, but Egypt has closed it borders to Gaza for almost two years.

Anti-Semitic, the protestors have nothing against Jewish people. I have commented on several articles published by Oldham chron and know their are several individuals who are against the Asian/Muslim community. We are very thankful to Oldham Chronicle for publishing this article as it has helped to raise awareness and to everyone that continues to buy Israeli products........no water will wash the blood on your hands. Peace

If you can’t see what’s going on in Palestine then you need to do research and stop relying on western media. BBC, Sky, CNN etc... They pick and choose what they want us to see. i.e. Tunnels, rockets etc… this is all a cover up.
This all started when 3 Jewish teens were murdered, the government of Israel immediately accused Hamas of abducting them. What actually happened to them is unknown.
Open your eyes and see what is going on in front of you!
We all need to unite and condemn this brutality!

Typical Local Heroes...If they're so concerned why don't they catch a plane and go over there and wave their banners?
Big and Brave as usual...when they're hundreds of miles away!

Since when is criticising Israel anti-semitic ... if someone was to criticise the Italian government about something would they be anti-Catholic ?

Come on Dick, if you think it's as simple as that then you have a very naïve view!
Hamas have a stated policy, the destruction of the state of Israel and the murder of ALL Jews.
Criticising Israel on their behalf absolutely is anti semitic.
I note that there's no criticism of Hamas or Iran who supplies them, and as others have noted, there is no criticism of any Muslim group perpetrating horrific human rights abuses.
That's why it's an anti semitic protest.

AT Flake.

Yes you are right, ISIS are another extremist group creating havoc and they need to be condemned and have been condemned by the majority of the Muslims for their actions.

Lets not make this about religion as Judaism is not guilty for the terrorism caused by Zionism neither is Islam for the terrorism created by ISIS.

I am focused on Israel as ISIS is a small fish compared to ISrael. Israel kills women and children with bombs, chemical weapons and pays politicians to stay silent.

wouldn't a protest outside tesco's on Huddersfield rd made more of an impact, with it apparently being the biggest one in the north west

And yes MAD4IT wonder how many protesters where ready for a bargain and went in tesco monday

At the time of writing, there have been 39 posts on this subject. And yet all those who are extremely vocal about Israel's shameful part in this conflict are still silent in condemning Hamas for their cowardly terrorist activities and yet what is worse still, nothing is said about Sunni Muslims/ISIS attempt at the genocide of Shi'ites in Syria/Iraq. YOUR SILENCE IS DEAFENING and you should be collectively ashamed of yourselves.

Flake can you provide a reference for the below

"Today we find that the latest 'attack' near a UN school has been staged, by Hamas planting bodies of dead children to outrage world opinion.
ISIS does it for real !"

Regards,

iqi88.

- Illegal settlements all over the West Bank, a total violation of international law
- A siege of basic supplies getting in
- A brutal occupation
- Deaths of thousands of Palestinians, many children & women
- Schools and hospitals bombed regularly
- Thousands of Palestinian prisoners under the age of 18
- The list goes on...

Ask yourself, would you tolerate this? Israel have committed War Crimes and this is evident. THEY SAY 'WE ARE FIGHTING TERRORISTS' BUT AMERICA AND ISRAEL ARE THE TERRORISTS

what a ridiculous way to protest against Israel.

If my country sorts its foreign policies out and stops funding terrorists abroad then may be we will not need protestors.. Try going to Gaza and do not b so naive

Come on IQI almost everything ISIS does can be justified in religion. If you want references of the staging then do a google search there are quite a few!
Perhaps you'd provide a definition of 'Zionist terrorism'?
The elimination of the Jews is however one of Hamas's stated aims, it absolutely is anti Semitism and religion.
Look up a man called Haj Amin Al-Husseini a man revered by Palestinians a friend of Hitler and one of the Architects of the holocaust.
A shameful history of anti Semitism.

Israel has a right to defend itself and deal with Hamas firing rockets into its territory and I would support them in that. However, it does not have a right to slaughter huge numbers of civilians which it what it is doing. Disgusting.

Of course we condemn what ISIS has done and is doing but this is no where near what Israel is doing in front of the eyes of the world. Israel's action is unjustified like many leaders have said. We cannot compare Israel and ISIS. Israel is a powerhouse funded by their partner in crime America, both the biggest Terrorists!

Israel is doing what Hitler did to the Jews.
How many Israeli civilians have died with the rockets? 2? 3? Exactly!

Over 1,800 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel!!!

So, let me get this straight, Hamas fires rockets into Israel from heavily populated areas knowing full well the Israelis will retaliate. Would I be correct to think Hamas does this, sacrificing children etc, simply to outrage the rest of the world? Hamas could target Israel with rockets from wasteland but I suppose that would risk their lives and they are not prepared to do that?
