Balloons go up to mark centenary

Date published: 08 August 2014

COLOURED balloons were launched in Springhead as a poignant reminder of the start of the First World War.

Dianne Hayes, court manager for sheltered housing provider Housing 21, arranged the celebration for her residents at Hood Square and The Old Mill House, some of whom could remember their parents’ struggle in the post-war years.

And it was a double celebration, as it was the first event that Councillor Adrian Alexander has attended since he won his battle with cancer and he was very proud to show support and attend.

Debbie Abrahams MP opened the event with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and Cynthia Dean was moved to tears as she read out a poem.

This was the first of a series of events organised by Housing 21 and the residents of Hood Square and The Old Mill house to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The next event will be a dinner prepared by Relish and an evening of music from the 1914 era held at The Old Mill House.
