All we are saying is...

A peace flag is flying over Oldham Civic Centre as a symbol of support for victims of the Gaza conflict.

Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and co-operatives, said it was important the council represents the whole community and believes the vast majority of residents will back the call for peace.

She added: “This is about showing our humanitarian support for victims.

“It is not about supporting one nation over another, or creating a precedent for future flags being flown, but a reasonable act of reflection which can bring all communities together.

“Whatever the history of this conflict, the killing of innocent civilians, including children, has caused distress and concern not just in Oldham but around the world.”

The flag is in keeping with national flags flown on World Peace Day with the borough crest bearing the words “Peace and Respect”.

The flag will also be used in any future conflicts where there is significant loss of civilian life as a symbol of Oldham coming together in the spirit of peace. The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Fida Hussain, raised the flag at a special ceremony yesterday.

A peace conference is planned for September 29 to discuss possible longer-term action Oldham could take.
