Taking the sting out of divorce

Date published: 15 August 2014

A NEW way to divorce that aims to reduce the emotional and financial toll is being promoted in Oldham.

Offered via a pioneering group of collaborative lawyers and Pearson Solicitors, the innovative concept sees all legal matters surrounding a divorce discussed and settled with solicitors sat around a table.

All collaborative lawyers are members of Resolution, an association of 6,500 lawyers committed to a non-confrontational approach to resolving family disputes.

Referred to as collaboration law, the concept reduces the financially costly court process and the emotional burden that comes with it.

The client still has legal advice, but they can set the pace as the process is not governed by court dates and appearances.

Pearson Solicitors’ Tracy Crompton promoted the innovative recently at Oldham’s Women in Business Group.

Mrs Crompton also has plans to talk to other groups in Stockport and Royton over the next few months — with dates to be set.

She said: “This new approach is especially important when children are involved but both parties must be in the right frame of mind to opt for collaboration.

“Through round-table negotiations and by taking the right advice from a collaborative lawyer couples can save time, money and heartache. It’s divorce as amicable as possible under the circumstances.”

With collaborative law, once a couple has reached agreement they can both be confident the settlement is legally binding, as it can be sanctioned by the court without either party having to step foot into the court room.

Mrs Crompton has now joined the High Peak, Oldham and Tameside group of collaborative lawyers and is keen to talk to anyone who wants further information.
