Will at the sharp end

WILL Manchester ended up treating a stab victim while on work-experience at a health centre in Bolivia.

Now the Oldham Sixth Form College student is a step closer to a medical career after getting 2A*s and an A in biology, chemistry and Spanish.

He is taking a gap year before applying to do a medical degree — but will be kept busy as he plans to do voluntary work and more travelling.

“I am shocked but very happy,” he said.

The 18-year-old from Wardle had to deal with basic resources during his work experience in La Paz. The first week was spent helping at a baby clinic and the second working with TB patients.

He also helped to deal with a man who had been stabbed several times in a fight and said: “He was a mess.

“He had seen an emergency doctor but because there is no continuing care in Bolivia, we had to go round to his house, clean him up and get rid of the infection.”

Will also volunteered at the head injury unit a Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale, and plays basketball and tennis.
