MORE than 200 people ran in the second annual Oldham Milltown 10k race yesterday.

Runners of all abilities tackled the course, which started and finished in the town centre.

The race was won by Bruno Lima (35min 16sec), 27 seconds ahead of fellow Salford Harrier Glyn Billington. Royton Runners’ Russell Ingham won a sprint finish for third place (37min 12sec).

Bus driver Bruno said: “It was windy and raining but much better than last year because they closed the roads to traffic. The stewards were fantastic.”

The honours in the women’s race went to Gaynor Keane from Saddleworth Runners who crossed the line first (41min 45sec) followed by Royton Road Runner Kirsty White (42min 49sec) and Amy Shadbolt from Saddleworth Runners (43min 31sec).

The race is part of the Oldham Milltown series which also includes a 7k and half marathon.

A couple of months later than last year’s inaugural Oldham 10k, this year’s was a little warmer but just as wet, writes Chronicle employee and keen runner Steve Berry
There was sun, rain, heat and more rain - but gusting winds hampered runners most this year, seemingly always holding runners back rather than pushing us on.

The organisers countered it superbly by providing much more space: last year’s race was marred by runners having to stick to the pavements all the way to Shaw, then all the way back down Shaw Road toward Salmon Fields. As such it was quite difficult to make progress in some of the busier sections. Not this year. With no traffic along the route, runners could spread out and run their own pace much more easily. A vast improvement!

Progress was further aided by excellent marshalling at road junctions.

Not many 10K races offer chip-timing and a substantial medal for such a modest price.

How did I do? Two minutes slower than last year. I’d better get some miles in before the Oldham Half Marathon...
