Live wire danger - under bath!
Date published: 19 August 2014
A FAMILY has been “too terrified” to use their bath after potentially dangerous electrical cables were exposed after a leak and ceiling collapse.
Nick Tushingham says he, his partner Lorraine and their two-year-old daughter Frayer could have been at risk for a year.
The faulty wire discovered when a leak in the bathroom of their home, in Shelley Road, Derker, caused part of the kitchen ceiling to fall. A plumber who inspected the bathroom received a mild electric shock from under the bath and shut off the power, urging the family to contact an electrician.
It was found a wire under the bathroom floor could have been damaged by a nail.
Mr Tushingham (24) said: “I’ve got a two-year-old daughter and for the past 12 months we have been using the bath to bathe her. It’s scary to think what could have happened to her, or any of us.”
He added: “Before we moved in 12 months ago the roof caved in on the previous occupants and had to be repaired. Since we had the leak it has been getting worse. We’re worried about how safe it is.”
The couple are writing a formal complaint to First Choice Homes about the problems: “We want them to sort out the problems properly, not quick fixes and temporary solutions.”
Dave Woods of First Choice Homes Oldham, said the leak and damaged cable had been repaired within a day of workers being called to the home, and plasterwork to the kitchen ceiling will be done early next month.
