Metrolink’s £34m on new trams
Date published: 16 September 2014
METROLINK bosses have ordered 16 new trams worth £34 million.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) used money from the Government’s Local Growth Fund to order the units from maker Bombardier.
It was initially thought the money would pay for only 12 trams, but favourable exchange rates and a bulk order allowed another four to be added. By 2017 Metrolink’s fleet will number 120 vehicles. The network opened in 1992 with only 26 trams.
