GROUPS set to take over Oldham’s youth services say they are cautiously optimistic they can cope with the extra responsibility.
Oldham Council has announced it will “reluctantly” shift control of youth services to community groups to save money. Oldham Community Leisure and Oldham Youth Zone, Mahdlo, will take over.
Mahdlo’s chief executive, Helen Taylor, stressed the partnership between Mahdlo and the council would aim to deliver the best services possible.
“I understand the council’s regret in having to cut services,” she said. “None of us want to see these decisions being made but, unfortunately, they are the reality and we are working closely with the council to offer our assistance in retaining as many services as possible.”
The proposal is to move the council’s Detached Youth Work team and the Youth Development team to Mahdlo, initially for a year. Mahdlo will work with council staff to ensure a smooth transition.
“Mahdlo already provides a vast array of services that support young people to live more active lives, develop their creative talents, get outdoors, improve their health and well-being, achieve their career aspirations and develop their leadership skills,” said Ms Taylor.
“Having these teams seconded to Mahdlo would enhance our ability to really respond to local need and help ensure joined up services with other voluntary sector deliverers.”
Oldham Community Leisure is likely to take over management of school swimming services and outdoor education.
