A MOTHER has been touched by the kindness shown her daughter at the opening of a special sensory room for disabled pupils at St Edward’s RC School in Lees.

The room’s creation has been inspired by seven-year-old Ruby Baker, who has Leigh Syndrome, which leads to progressive loss of mental and physical abilities.

The room will allow Ruby and other pupils with similar conditions to stay at St Edward’s and have a safe place to stay on difficult days.

Pupils and teachers have raised money and an anonymous donor gave the school £5,000 for the project after reading the story in the Chronicle.

Natalie Baker, Ruby’s mum, said: “It has just been fantastic for Ruby. It really touched me when I heard the other children had been raising money, that really means a lot.

“It was such a hard decision to keep Ruby in mainstream school as her condition means that she isn’t always physically able to do what her friends do.

“We considered the possibility of changing her to a school that could meet her special needs but we couldn’t bring ourselves to take her away from the friends she has made over the past four years.

“This sensory room will mean that Ruby can stay at St Edwards, enjoy the best of what school days have to offer and we are safe in the knowledge that she is getting the most out of the experience.”
