BT has promised an early answer to problems that have prevented the opening of a multi-million pound doctors’ surgery.

Five thousand patients in Delph and surrounding villages were shocked when they learned the new centre in Gartside Street may have to remain idle until the new year because BT would’t be able to install phone and data cables until then because the council requires 12 weeks’ notice of road works.

After inquiries by the Evening Chronicle, BT has installed a temporary link and the council has agreed to waive the 12 week rule so cables can be laid under the road.

A BT spokesman said: “We are working closely with the council to sort this issue out as soon as possible.”
