THE expansion of a Failsworth primary school to create 70 new places has been given the go-ahead by members of the Oldham Council cabinet.

Two new classrooms, extended toilets and a 3G pitch will be built at Propps Hall Primary School.

The work, expected to be completed for new school year in September 2015, is part of the council’s response to a rise in the number of children needing primary school places.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, cabinet member for education, said: “It’s crucial that we are prepared and take action now.

Propps Hall is the latest school in the borough to be expanded to address the increase in primary age children.

Work has already taken place to expand three Chadderton primaries — Mills Hill, Yew Tree and Bare Trees — which now provide a combined total of 80 new places.

OLDHAM’S newest special school will be built at the former Kaskenmoor school site after the council agreed a 125-year lease with sponsors New Bridge Multi-Academy Trust.

The £6.25 million school will provide state-of-the art equipment for pupils with autistic spectrum disorder at the Roman Road site in Hollinwood.

The school, which is expected to open in September, 2015, will provide an environment tailored for 140 pupils aged four to 19 who require additional help.
