THOUSANDS of Oldhamers braved the cold to help Oldham’s civic bonfire go off with a bang last night.
Around 15,000 visitors at Oldham Edge enjoyed live music, dazzling entertainment and a stunning 30-minute firework display set to hits from ITV show “The X Factor”.
Fairground rides and traditional games kept the youngsters entertained and the queues at the food stalls bustled all night long.
The Juba De Leao drummers belted out Brazilian beats while the Gandini Jugglers entertained with a magical routine using state-of-the-art lighting, while Fire Man Dave and his team put on a spectacular flame-juggling display.
James Garfin (7), from Hodge Clough Primary School, won a competition to push the button to start the countdown and kick start the colourful display of fireworks.
His dad, Shaun Garfin, said: “What a fantastic, well-organised event and a fireworks display to be proud of. James loved starting the Big Bang and I’m so proud of him. He was bouncing for ages afterwards.” Council leader Jim McMahon, who took his partner and children, added: “Wow, what a firework display.
“We joined thousands of people for a great event. Days like this make you love Oldham.”
