A DEDICATED volunteer team has won a major award after “adopting” the Huddersfeild Narrow Canal in Saddleworth.
Street Scene Greenfield has been praised for diligent work on the canal in being named Manchester and Pennine Volunteer Group of the Year by the Canal and River Trust.
Street Scene took on a section between Division Bridge and Wade Locks and has laid 60 tons of stone along the towpath.
Street Scene group leader Gill McCulley said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the recognition. We meet up twice a month, determined to bring improvements. This is a well-trodden towpath, so our aim has been to improve it.”
Communities across England and Wales were invited to adopt mile-long lengths of canal or river and make improvements.
Steve O’Sullivan, volunteer co-ordinator for the Canal & River Trust’s Manchester and Pennine region, said: “The Greenfield volunteers have made a huge impact on the canal, so it is a pleasure to recognise them with the award.”
