SUPER volunteer Mohammed Usmaan Mahood received an honorary award after chalking up 1,218 hours of community work.

The 16 year old was among the 75 Hathershaw College pupils who graduated from Oldham’s Children’s University, a national scheme recognising the involvement of children and young people in extra-curricular activities.

Seven to 14-year-olds are given a “Passport to Learning” and gain credits over each year for attending activities such as scouts, sports, dance classes and art gallery and library sessions. These add up to end-of-year awards. There is also a “Passport to Volunteering” for teenagers who do 500-1,000 hours of voluntary work.

A graduation ceremony at Hathershaw College saw Mohammed receive an honorary award for his outstanding contribution. He is involved with various projects, from youth work schemes in Werneth to volunteering at Oldham Carnival and working for Oldham Youth Council.

He is also a member of his school council and organised Hathershaw College’s Children in Need activities, which raised a record £2,500.

He said: “I have quite a lot of relatives who do voluntary work so I thought I would as well because it is so worthwhile. I really enjoy it.”
