Cristian Montano: threat to sue his former club
ATHLETIC chairman Simon Corney has been surprised by news that sacked former winger Cristian Montano is to sue the club.
Colombian Montano (22), was dismissed by Athletic last December. A newspaper sting led to him and five other players being arrested following spot-fixing allegations.
The National Crime Agency released all six players on bail, and the investigation continues, but no criminal charges have been brought.
Montano’s solicitor, Roy Ledgister, said: “At the time of his arrest we urged Oldham to suspend him and then reach a conclusion at the end of a trial. They didn’t do this, acted recklessly and on emotions, and will now have to face the consequences.”
Montano, signed by Athletic from West Ham in 2012, was implicated in a Sun on Sunday story that claimed he had tried to get booked for money during a game against Wolves.
Despite the absence of charges, Athletic dismissed Montano on disciplinary grounds, irrespective of legal proceedings.
Montano said: “I wanted to give my version of events but nobody would listen.”
Corney, left, however, appears content that the correct disciplinary decision was reached. The Athletic chief said: “We find this development very surprising, given that the National Crime Agency’s investigation is ongoing. Should this go to court, we look forward to making public the various issues with Cristian”
