CHOIRS and bands raised the roof at Oldham Parish Church at the Oldham Evening Chronicle’s annual Festival of Carols.

The spectacular event, hosted by broadcasting veteran Marjorie Stephinson MBE, featured performances from Crompton House School band, St Matthew’s School choir, Diggle Primary School choir, Saddleworth guitar quartet, Christ Church Chadderton choral speaking group, soprano Claire Lees and group Notability. Organist Les Garner accompanied the acts and the Rev Derek Palmer conducted the service.

Traditional carols, such as “Once In Royal David’s City” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night”, were performed alongside more contemporary numbers, such as “Christmas Swingalong”.

Soloist Claire Lees dazzled with her renditions of “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night”, and the Christ Church Chadderton choral speaking group performed the “Three Bears Rap” and “Huffer and Cuffer”.

The event, in aid of The Christie at Oldham, concluded with a reading of the Lord’s Prayer and a rousing rendition of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”.
