Bank branch to shut down

Date published: 16 December 2014

The Natwest bank branch in Chadderton is to close down.

It was only six years ago that the branch celebrated its 125-year anniversary, but in March next year the doors will close forever.

The decision was made after the number of transactions taking place at the Middleton Road branch dropped by 19 per cent over the last few years.

A Natwest spokesperson said: “Over our whole branch network there has been a 30 per cent drop in branch transactions since 2010 as people do their banking where and when it is convenient for them, while online and mobile transactions have grown by over 200 per cent.

“We do understand that some of our customers do not use the internet or mobile phone app and prefer to be served over-the-counter. As a result we have come to an agreement with the local post office, which is close to the branch and there are a further four post offices within a one-mile radius, so that customers can withdraw cash, check balances, and make deposits free of charge. Our local business customers are now also able to get coinage.”

Natwest is happy to discuss proposals with any organisation or community group who may be interested in acquiring the premises once the branch shuts.
