Cub scout’s honour

Date published: 16 December 2014

A DEDICATED cub scout is celebrating after achieving the highest accolade offered by the organisation, the Chief Scout Silver Award.

Shai Garlick joined the 83rd St Stephen’s Cub Scouts when the group reformed back in January, 2013, and made it his mission to earn the top prize.

The 11-year-old completed challenges in six categories — outdoor, fitness, global, promise, creative and community — earning several activity badges along the way.

Shai, who is the first cub in the group to complete the challenges, was presented with his award by David Marsland, assistant district commissioner for cubs in Oldham, during the St Stephen and All Martyrs Church parade service on Sunday.

Assistant cub leader Steve Smith said: “Shai is a well-mannered and polite cub, he shows enthusiasm with all the badges and activities we have done.

“He has attended almost every pack night over the two-year period and has attended all our camps, trips and organised activities.

“It is a magnificent achievement for any cub to achieve their Silver Award. It has been a pleasure having him in our cub pack and he will be missed.”

Shai will now have the chance to earn his Gold Award while a member of the scouts.

The 83rd St Stephens’ Cub Scouts meet on Tuesdays (between 7 and 8.30pm) at Higginshaw Rugby Social Club, St Stephen’s Street, Higginshaw.
