OLDHAM artist Emily Harvey has made a big impression on the town with her weekly illustrations in the Evening Chronicle but she is now moving on after landing a full-time job.

Emily (22), from Waterhead, has been creating a weekly topical drawing during the last year which features in the paper on Fridays.

In her hunt for full-time work the former Counthill School pupil approached us to discuss drawing an image around a story from the Chronicle each week.

The idea was to build experience and boost her CV and it clearly worked as she has just landed a job as a concept artist/production designer working on a children’s TV show “Rollie & Friends” at Studio Distract, Manchester after spending two months as an intern there.

Emily said: “When I left university I really struggled to find work due to most animation studios needing one year’s experience.

Triple distinction

“I then decided to start doing commissions for people while finding full-time work. It was then that I decided to approach the paper and ask if I could do an illustration weekly or monthly. By doing this my work got better and better.”

Emily started drawing from an early age but her passion for illustration really kicked off when she got onto a college course at Tameside College studying animation after school and achieving a triple distinction. She then went to university at the National Centre for Computer Animation in Bournemouth and studied animation arts.

Emily said it was not easy landing her dream career but it has all been worth it in the end.

She said: “It’s been hard work building my skills as an artist, however, it has been so worth it to now say I work in my desired field doing a job I love.”
