STOP and search police powers will be discussed during a public forum in Oldham hosted by Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd on Monday.

The event, at Mahdlo Youth Zone in Egerton Street, will hear GMP discuss improvements and how police use the sometimes controversial powers.

Young people who have experienced stop and search will also be given a chance to share their stories and a panel made up of members of the local community will quiz GMP on the process.

Mr Lloyd said: “When used correctly, stop and search is a vital tool for helping keep our communities safe.

“But a careful balance must be struck between public safety and individual freedoms.

“As police and crime commissioner, it’s my job to hold the police to account and make sure they are doing their jobs properly.”

Joining Mr Lloyd will be Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle and Roy Walters, former Mayor for Manchester and councillor for Moss Side. The public event starts at 2pm.
