DRESSES to impress in felt
AN exhibition at Gallery Oldham reveals new and exciting uses of felt.
Black Sheep takes a look at a material that has a long and intriguing history which has been used in military armour, housing, winter clothes and even conceptual art.
The display also explores an edgier side to this versatile fabric and looks at artists who have created bizarre and often disturbing — but always technically brilliant — objects from it.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for town centres, culture and tourism, said: “Black Sheep is a unique exhibition as it shows what can be made from a material which many people take to be an everyday object.
“It also showcases the contemporary masters of felt-making and their unique and innovative practices.”
The National Centre for Craft and Design touring exhibition runs from Saturday until May 9. Info at www.blacksheepfelt.wordpress.com.
