Campaigner Barry Haslam has stepped down as chair of Oldham’s Tranx group due to continuing ill health.
Tranx, which supports people withdrawing from prescription drug addiction, was set up by former addicts to offer help to other sufferers.
Mr Haslam, who helped to found the group, dedicated his life to campaigning against the long-term prescription of benzodiazapines after his own experiences.
He now fears Tranx may be forced to close in its current format unless someone takes over his role.
Barry took the drugs for five years even thogh they were intended for short-term use.
After a 15-month fight he became drug free - but believes the drugs left him with health problems.
Mr Haslam said: “Due to my continuing ill health I am retiring and stepping down as chair with immediate effect.”
The next group meeting is at the Link Centre, Union Street, on March 2 (11am-1pm).
