Frosty reception for fridge-tippers

FURIOUS villagers have slammed callous fly-tippers for turning a local beauty spot into a dump.

Nearly 20 refrigerators have been strewn over Saddleworth moorland just a few yards from one of Britain’s most popular walking routes, the Pennine Way.

The fridges, some the size of catering units, were abandoned at the weekend, 100 yards from the main A62 Oldham to Huddersfield road on the outskirts of Diggle.

The mess, in sight of popular picnic spot Brunclough Reservoir, angered local residents.

Mark Brooks, newly-appointed chair of Diggle Community Association, said: “The people who do this are despicable — they really make my blood boil. When you’re trying to do something good for the community and incidents like this happen, it shakes your faith in people.

“I would urge anyone who has any information to contact the local authority’s waste enforcement team immediately.”

Senior Saddleworth parish councillor, Royce Franklin, said: “Clearly whoever is responsible for this vandalism cares nothing about the countryside in which we live. Such irresponsible behaviour is unforgivable.”

Andy Valentine, the area’s ranger for the Peak District National Park, said: “It’s disgusting behaviour. This dumping shows a complete disregard for the beautiful and rugged surroundings.”
