A THIEF who stole and wrote off a £60,000 supercar led police on an M60 motorway chase at up to 104 mph, a court has heard.

The owner of the rare Porsche 911 Carrera GTS heard about the theft when a tracking company rang him on a skiing holiday to say his car - which he left on his Dobcross driveway - was on the move. The company contacted police.

Manchester Crown Court was told patrol officers saw the car on the motorway in Prestwich. The driver, 24-year-old Lewis Lowe, accelerated away and weaved dangerously in and out of traffic to get away.

The car was chased for six miles until Lowe lost control and crashed into an embankment, writing off the car, which had been clocked at 100 mph on the A666 towards Bolton. Lowe suffered only scratches from brambles as he tried to run off. Police also recovered stolen items.

Jailing him for two years, Judge Maurice Greene told him: “This was a Friday afternoon on one of the busiest motorways in the country. It was sheer luck nobody was killed.”

Juliet Berry prosecuting, said Lowe, of Ashton, had spotted the Porsche on the driveway of owner Paul Ackroyd and decided to steal it. He broke into the house and stole the keys and other items.
