YOUTH councillors are urging Oldham’s young population to get involved in local democracy.

OYC is encouraging people to become League of Young Voters champions and learn how they can help others get involved in politics. They have organised an information session at Oldham Civic Centre on March 26 (6-8pm). Anyone aged 14-24 who is passionate about issues is welcome to attend.

Youth councillor Mariam Waseem said: “The low voter turnout in recent elections does confirm youth disengagement within politics is a more urgent matter for us to address as a nation — young people are the future of democracy. If we’re not engaged now, where does that leave the democratic processes in 20 years?”

The event is part of OYC’s work around the League of Young voters’ campaign which aims to get young people voting in huge numbers. Email oldhamyouthcouncil@oldham.gov.uk to book a seat.
