Off to work we go

GREEN-FINGERED volunteers have transformed an unloved patch of land in Failsworth from drab to fab.

Around 60 people from children to pensioners filled a mountain of bin bags by clearing the overgrown paths and litter from the land on Rochdale Road between Ash and Beech Streets.

They also planted bulbs and shrubs and painted benches at the clean and grow event organised by the environmental charity Groundwork.

Staff from KFC and Co-operative Travel joined in along with Police Community Support Officers and the nearby Wholesome Cafe provided lunch.

The event was organised by Groundwork’s Cheryl Brock who has recently been appointed as a growing ambassador, one of a group of local residents recruited to inspire more people to grow and eat healthy food.

She said: “We had a huge turn-out and we had lots of people on the buses waving to us. The best thing about it was everyone working together — they all worked so hard and we are really pleased with the result.”

Cheryl was enlisted by her friend, local councillor Elaine Garry who said: “It really gives you a lift as there is not much green space round here. The basics were here but it was very un-loved and tired.”
