A CIVIL engineer from Shaw was at Buckingham Palace last week to mark the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston’s legacy.

Tony Young attended a reception hosted by the Queen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which since 1965 has given travel and educational grants to more than 5,000 British citizens.

Tony went on his fellowship trip to America and Canada in 1969 to investigate urban public transport systems. He has used the knowledge he acquired to plan new tram systems - including Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network.

Tony said: “My Churchill fellowship led to a planning post and the opportunity to work on bus, rail and light rail plans for Greater Manchester. The most exciting project was Metrolink Phase One, which Her Majesty officially opened in 1992, and which has expanded to a countywide network”.

Fellows from every decade since 1965 represented the Trust at the reception as well as representatives from the Australian and American branches of the trust.

The trust has just awarded a record number of 150 fellowships, investing at least £1.3million in British citizens.
