Step in right direction for footbridge

WORK will start on an “eyesore” footbridge on Union Street this summer.
Councillor Howard Sykes asked if the £3.16m awarded to Oldham Council by the Department of Transport would go towards fixing the bridge, which is used as access to Oldham Sixth Form College and the town centre.
The bridge was opened in 2000 but has been plagued with broken glass caused by the movement and flexing of the structure.
Council leader Jim McMahon said: “You’re right, it’s terrible. People don’t feel safe crossing that bridge to access Oldham.”
Councillor Dave Hibbert also stated that £200,000 will go towards repainting white lines on roads, especially on busy A-roads.
