Steve Hill braved the sub-zero temperatures to run the North Pole marathon in just over nine and a half hours
DAREDEVIL teacher Steve Hill has defied delays and bone-chilling temperatures to complete his toughest challenge yet.
The deputy head of St Joseph’s Primary School in Shaw, braved temperatures of minus 41 degrees as he took on the North Pole Marathon and finished 30th in 9hr 37min 9sec.
The teacher had aimed to be back at school today, but the marathon started two days late on Saturday.
Steve finally arrived back at Logyearbyen base — between Norway and the North Pole — in the early hours of Monday morning after more delays due to the weather.
He posted on his Facebook page: “What an experience — brutal (minus 41 degrees) but loved every minute. What a journey.”
The winner of the marathon — which attracted 45 runners from 22 countries — was professional triathlete Peter Vabrousek, from the Czech Republic, who completed the 26.2 mile course in under half Steve’s time.
Steve’s annual challenges have helped his year six classes to raise more than £50,000 for charity - and gained Steve the MBE.
