Join in three-day treats for St George

CELEBRATE St George’s Day in Oldham with three days of events across the borough.

Oldham Council is encouraging residents to take part in this year’s celebrations, which begin with the raising of the St George’s Flag at the Civic Centre tomorrow.

Councillor Fida Hussain, the Mayor of Oldham, will be joined by civic dignitaries and community representatives to hoist the flag at 8.30am.

Councillor Hussain said: “St George’s Day is a poignant national occasion and Oldham Council is proud to fly the flag of the patron saint of England as part of our tradition of recognising events in the national and civic calendar.”

Saturday (1-4pm): Arts and crafts, circus skills and competitions at Waterhead Park, organised by Big Local Oldham. It’s also a chance to find out more about Big Local Oldham’s Big Lottery-funded projects for Clarksfield, Greenacres and Littlemoor and how residents can get involved with Big Local. Saturday (1-3pm): Family entertainment at Apfel Lane Community Centre, Chadderton. The event will include bric-a-brac stalls, a bouncy castle, football shoot-out and refreshments.

Sunday (11am-2pm): Attractions at Royton Town Hall include donkeys, circus acts, face painting, afternoon tea, craft and food stalls. Residents can also find out more about the new Royton Sports Centre and have taster sessions with Oldham Community Leisure at the current Royton Pool.

Sunday (7.30am): Diggle Band Club will host a St George’s Day concert. Tickets, costing £7 and including a hot beef supper, are available from Diggle Post Office, Diggle Band Club or by calling 01457-873 937.
