Attack victim John Young and his wife Elaine have spoken of his life being turned upside down after a yob threw a brick that blinded him in one eye.

The newlyweds, who married only three weeks ago, were looking at their wedding photos at home in Keswick Avenue, Fitton Hill, when bricks were thrown at the house, smashing the living room window and front door.

John (66), a retired long-distance lorry driver and former soldier, went to the door.

“I only saw one person there,” said John. “Next thing I was struck by something and had a funny sensation down my face. The only other thing I remember is being in the back of the ambulance — it all happened so quickly.”

The unprovoked attack in the early hours of April 18 has left John able to see only shadows. He has lost his left eye and tragically had seriously impaired vision in his right eye before the attack.

The couple, who met 15 months ago at a charity event, were looking forward to their new lives but the attack has left them devastated.

John said: “We are not talking about a normal person here. Whoever did this is far from that. I’ve been through some hard things in my life and I’m determined to get through this.”

Elaine said: “It’s frightening to think you are not even safe in your own home. If anyone knows who did this, and has a conscience, come forward and stop it from happening again. No one should have to go through this.”

John and Elaine’s honeymoon is also in jeopardy. Doctors have yet to make a decision whether it is safe for John to travel to Malta in three weeks. But brave John added: “If there’s any possibility I can board that plane, I’ll do it.”

The couple are due to move soon to Elaine’s home town of Southport.
