Mayor Councillor Fida Hussain and local dignitaries mark St George’s day this morning.
THE Mayor of Oldham launched Oldham’s St George’s Day celebrations this morning by raising the flag from the Civic Hall.
The Mayor, Councillor Fida Hussain, was joined by civic dignitaries and community representatives at 8.30am as he hoisted flag of St George. The ceremony was the start of three days of events across the borough.
Oldham East and Saddleworth Conservative candidate Sajjad Hussain, is calling for St George’s Day to become a bank holiday in England. He believes the country should follow the lead of Ireland and Scotland in honouring their patron saints.
In Royton residents once again hung St George’s flags along Rochdale Road and Shaw Road ready for today’s celebrations.
SADDLEWORTH Male Voice Choir will be on-song for St George on Saturday. The choir will stage its annual Concert for St George in the Civic Hall, Uppermill, from 7.30pm, conducted by the choir’s musical director, Dorian Kelly.
Members will sing a variety of pieces from their repertoire and the audience will be invited to join in the flag-waving, sing-along finale including favourites such as “There’ll always be an England”, “Jerusalem” and “Land of Hope and Glory”.
