‘Rambo’ was the dad I never knew

THE daughter of one of Oldham’s best-known characters says she has been touched by the number of people who have paid tribute to her father — a man she never actually knew.

Melanie Clover (41) is the daughter of Geoffrey Clover, who many Oldhamers knew as “Rambo”, the “Sholver Commando”, and by other names. Geoffrey was one of the most recognisable people in the town as he wandered the streets of Oldham for years.

Geoffrey was found dead at his home in Lynmouth Avenue, Hathershaw on April 1.

After his death thousands of Oldhamers took to social media to pay their respects and share their memories of him. Melanie, from Royton, said though she never actually knew her dad, she was pleased so many people knew who he was.

“It’s sad. I never knew my dad. He and my mum split up when I was four and we never spoke. I used to see him when he was walking around and I knew who he was, but we never spoke.

“When I did see him, I remember him having a big grin on his face though. It was sad to find out he had died, but it is really nice to hear how many people knew who he was.”

The news sparked an outpouring of grief for the popular local figure. A Facebook page, The Rambo Appreciation Society, was flooded with tributes.

A fund started by Chloe Williamson and Daryl Isaccs is now likely to be used to pay for a new bench and memorial plaque in his memory.

Mr Clover’s funeral is on Wednesday, a service at Roundthorn Salvation Army at 2pm being followed by committal at Oldham Crematorium in Hollinwood.

Flowers should be sent to the Chapel of Rest, or donations if desired, to the Salvation Army.
