GREENFIELD runner Martin Cain won Oldham’s inaugural Milltown to Moors sprint triathlon.

The 37 year old beat the 164-strong field to complete the 400 metre swim, a challenging 20 kilometre bike ride and a 5 kilometre run in one hour and a minute.

Former international cyclist Jake Regan (19), from Denshaw, who competed in the World Cup last year before quitting the sport, was second. The fastest woman was 27-year-old Danielle Bogue, from Birmingham.

The sprint triathlon is the latest in the “Milltown to Moors” series which includes a half marathon and 10k and 7k runs.

Athletes completed the swim at Saddleworth Pool before the bike ride took in some of Saddleworth’s most challenging inclines in Uppermill, Diggle, Delph, Scouthead, Austerlands, Lees, Grotton and Grasscroft.

Martin said afterwards: “It was brilliant, really well-thought out and fantastically organised.”

Danielle agreed, adding: I thought it was fantastic and made the most of the scenery.”

The field also included many first-time triathletes, as well as nine relay teams, and co-organiser Alan Keane said: “They were just having a go which is very brave considering the hills.”

The next events are the Milltown 7k on May 17, the Oldham 10k on June 21 and the tough Milltown To Moors Oldham Half Marathon, which includes more than 1,100ft of ascent, on October 18.
