Setting talent free
Date published: 22 May 2015
A GROUP of artists in Saddleworth and Mossley are sharing their work with the public in a very special way.
The “Free Art Friday Saddleworth and Mossley” Facebook page is an exciting new concept which involves local artists leaving their work in public places for people to find and keep.
Started by Chris Baxter, a creative type from Uppermill, the group’s Free Art Friday concept is popular among artists worldwide.
Artist Dog Sigh is thought to have first started Free Art Friday more than 10 years ago. Chris said he saw a need for the concept to come to Saddleworth and Mossley with the huge amount and variety of artists in the area.
Chris said: “I really liked the idea so I thought I’d see if I could get it going locally.
“What’s great about Saddleworth and Mossley is the amount and variety of fantastic artists and creative people we have.
“Every Friday people in the group leave their artwork anywhere around Saddleworth and Mossley and take a picture of where it is for people to find.”
After setting up the group in February, there are now close to 300 members with the movement growing in popularity by the week.
Audience
Chris added: “We encourage more and more artists to get involved — we’d love to get some big names on board as well.
“Some people are put off by giving away their art for free but this is not about the value of the work but the great feeling of making someone’s day.
“What’s also fantastic is knowing that someone has found your work and put it up on their wall.
“It is nice for people who do have a creative outlet but don’t have an audience.”
