Heroes of the snows have a story to tell
Date published: 26 May 2015
OLDHAM’S heroes of the snows have produced a fascinating book to mark 50 years of helping the community.
The 136-page book is packed with personal accounts from members of the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and offers an insight into the role the service plays supporting police, fire, ambulance and the air ambulance. It traces the team’s formation in the harrowing wake of a tragic accident that saw three Rover Scouts lose their lives in April 1964 - leading to the formation of the Peak District Mountain Rescue organisation.
Later that year, Oldham Rover Crew, which attended the search, decided to start Oldham Rover Mountain Rescue Team which is now the much-admired volunteer OMRT.
The book is packed with dramatic pictures showing everything from members engaged in rescues and safety techniques by rope to the latest hi-tech developments of rescue techniques and equipment used now worldwide.
The book also reveals the close, binding friendship between the team and their loyalty and appreciation of support from the public.
Speaking of the new publication, Peter Hyde, who celebrates his 50th year with the team this year, said: “Hopefully, readers will get a taste of the highs and lows. Without the support of the people of Oldham and the surrounding villages we wouldn’t exist.”
The book, “50 Years”, is available at pubs and shops around the area displaying OMRT’s collection boxes, plus Saddleworth Museum.
