OLDHAM Council has put double yellow lines outside a new Werneth supermarket after motorists and residents hit out at traffic chaos it caused.
Manchester Superstore on Chamber Road opened on June 6, part of a franchise dubbed the largest ethnic superstore chain in the UK. An extension to the store, as well as stock, take up a significant amount of the building’s former car park. Local residents and motorists say less parking space has pushed visitors to either side of Chamber Road. Delivery wagons have also been parked in the road since they cann’t get into the car park, causing even more disruption. Buses have regularly been stopped for long periods since the store opened.
On Tuesday council workers painted double yellow lines outside the supermarket from Coppice Street to Kennedy Street to tackle the problem.
Abdul Ghafoor, owner of the Manchester Superstore chain, said: “We know it is chaos. I came here to provide a service, not to upset people. We are working hard to solve the issue. We have told our suppliers not to deliver goods in big lorries and vans in the future. We will fix this problem.”
The council and Mr Ghafoor are working together to solve planning issues.
