School garden club’s Tatton award

Higher Failsworth primary school’s award-winning entry

TALENTED pupils from Higher Failsworth Primary School wowed the judges at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park.

They took a “highly commended” award for their garden inspired by local poet Ben Brierley.

The garden was designed by members of the school gardening club and features elements made by pupils throughout the school, from poetry-book paving stones to top-hat planters. There is also a maypole, reflecting the origin of Failsworth Pole.

The garden is one of 12 by primary schools at the show, which runs until Sunday. Claire Yates, the school’s “outdoor learning” co-ordinator, said: “It’s our first time at Tatton. The look on the children’s faces when they were planting the garden was enough of a reward to me.”

The charity Maggie’s, which is opening a cancer support centre at the Royal Oldham Hospital next year, won a silver gilt award - the second-highest accolade available for designers - for its water garden.

Greenfield Growing Group and Mossley Community Centre were among the organisations who together created the Mill Town Meals allotment. Each group created a bed packed with all the ingredients to create a dish.
