£10 milkshake has taste of pure gold

Spindles shopping centre is home to what could be the UK’s most expensive and extravagant milkshake.

Crammed full of carats — the gold kind — it will set you back a tenner!

Smoothie operator Luckman Ali’s “Mayor’s Gold Milkshake” contains crushed chocolate, ice-cream and cream and is drizzled with edible liquid 23k gold, sprinkled with gold flakes.

The US-imported syrup is normally reserved for the most indulgent and pricey cocktails in New York’s most exclusive bars.

Created in homage to Oldham Mayor, Councillor Ateeque Ur-Rehman, who officially opened the outlet yesterday, Luckman is hoping there will be a gold rush for the bedrink, created by his friend Zaynah Adonis.

“As far as we know this is the only real gold milkshake in the UK,” said Luckman (24), from Westwood.

“I had the idea of launching a milkshake bar after setting up a convenience store in Featherstall Road last year. I had some space so I bought in a fridge and started selling funky favours of ice-cream. It proved to be really popular then I hit on the idea of making up milkshakes with crushed chocolate bars and they sold really well. Then I thought about opening a shake bar.”

The council’s Oldham Enterprise Fund offered him funding to set up shake bar Tuchez and gave him expert help.

The mayor said he was proud to have the milkshake named in his honour, adding: “Luckman is a perfect example of a young person who if they put their heart and mind to it can be successful.”
