AN inspirational teacher who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to educating youngsters in Oldham has died.
Glyn Jones (83) first came to Oldham in 1954 from Bangor, North Wales and spent the first few years of his teaching career at St Stephen’s C of E Primary School and St Thomas’s C of E Primary School, Newhey. He was then appointed deputy headteacher at St Hugh’s C of E Primary School, Holts Estate, and became acting headteacher at the age of 29.
Mr Jones - a father of two and grandfather of six - was appointed head teacher at Leesfield Primary School, Lees in 1968.
His wife Pamela said: “He had a particular interest in sport and music and achieved very high standards with his school choirs. He was involved in the early days of the Oldham Music Service.”
Mr Jones took early retirement from Leesfield in 1985 but only days later was approached by Foxdenton School, where he taught for a year before moving on to his final teaching job at Farrowdale House Preparatory School in Shaw for 10 years.
He was a member of Saddleworth Male Voice Choir for 37 years, and in his final years with the choir he awarded honorary life membership.
Mrs Jones added: “His dedication and enthusiasm for teaching and learning inspired many young lives throughout his career.”
Mr Jones died at the Royal Oldham Hospital after a short illness. His funeral will be at St Anne’s church, Lydgate from 12.15pm on Thursday, followed by cremation at Oldham Crematorium.
