TAKING shape . . . Oldham’s Independent Quarter is coming to life
A GROWING band of traders is relocating to Oldham following the council’s unveiling of a £1m investment package for the Independent Quarter — the triangle between Yorkshire Street, Clegg Street and Union Street East.
Since the initiative was launched last year several traders have moved into new premises with council.support. They say the initiative has given Yorkshire Street a “real buzz”.
Royton entrepreneur Carl Taylor brought a taste of America to the borough when Jack’s Smokehouse opened in the former Grapes Hotel. Keeping the smokehouse theme, the Smoke Yard restaurant opened last weekend in Church Terrace.
Maggie Hughes, owner of Zutti, the fashion business which has had a Yorkshire Street presence for 35 years, said: “I think it is fantastic. The redevelopment has already brought in a lot more customers and with tram links so close by, business is even better. I’m really excited to see even more improvements and more independent businesses come to the area. These are very exciting times.”
Mick Harwood, owner of Suits, Scoots and Boots, said: “I think the continuing development of the Independent Quarter is crucial to the overall success of Oldham’s regeneration. The council has steered clear of trying to lure in larger ‘identikit’ chains.”
Gillian Holt, co-owner of the Tymbuktu health and beauty salon — on Yorkshire Street for more than 45 years — said: “It is absolutely fantastic to see. Our turnover has increased and is getting better all the time. Having the Independent Quarter makes us different from other towns, and that is what’s going to bring people to Oldham.
The Treble Darts and Trophies store recently enjoyed a refurbishment with the council’s help.
Staff member Ward Morgan said: “The council has been absolutely fantastic. The shop is looking great, which is always good for business. It’s brilliant that we were helped with that. The Independent Quarter is a great concept. I personally can’t wait to try out the new smokehouses.”
