ATHLETIC 2 SCUNTHORPE 4

ATHLETIC fell to a first defeat under player-boss David Dunn's charge, as two second-half goals earned Scunthorpe the three points.

Gary McSheffrey struck first for the Iron and though Athletic turned the game on its head with quick-fire strikes by Liam Kelly and Dominic Poleon, Tommy Rowe levelled it up before half-time.

And Paddy Madden's seventh goal of the season was followed by a brilliant solo strike from substitute Kevin van Veen.

Tom Hopper hit a post with a volley before the visitors opened the scoring. Connor Brown gave up possession cheaply and Madden raced down the right on the counter-attack, feeding McSheffrey who finished low between David Cornell's legs.

Hopper then forced a very good save from Cornell with a far-post header, before the home side struck twice from out of the blue.

Kelly spun and turned the ball home after Danny Philliskirk's shot was charged down and it was 2-1 only two minutes later as Poleon turned in from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Scunthorpe levelled it up 10 minutes before half-time, when Rowe found space to twist, put the ball on his right foot and fire home a shot which took a heavy deflection to wrong-foot Cornell.

Athletic exerted some control in a relatively sedate second half, but succumbed to a strong counter-attack.

Neal Bishop raced down the right and crossed, Hopper header's was superbly saved by a diving Cornell but Madden followed up to fire home emphatically.

David Dunn brought himself onto the pitch in the closing stages but couldn't inspire an equaliser and Van Veen beat one man, nutmegged James Wilson and chipped over Cornell to round off the scoring.
