THE vehicle is totally engulfed by the fire

A couple narrowly escape injury when their car burst into flames moments after they got out of it.

The pair had gone to the Church Inn, Church Lane, Uppermill, at around 7pm when they saw smoke coming out from the VW Lupo vehicle. They went into the pub to get help but moments later the car was on fire.

Fire-fighters from Chadderton arrived on the scene a short while later but the car was destroyed.

Pub landlord Julian Taylor said: “A woman came in with her male friend. They were going to get a taxi but came in the car instead.

“They thought they had seen smoke but thought nothing of it. Then they saw smoke coming from the bonnet.

“By the time they came in and asked for a fire extinguisher it had caught fire.

“They were really massive flames. The woman was devastated. She’d just had the car serviced. But everyone reassured her that it wasn’t her fault. The car was destroyed. I’ve never seen anything made from metal burn so quick.”

lPOLICE are investigating after a stolen car was set alight in Shaw on Saturday morning. The Vauxhall Corsa, found on Oldham Road at around 6.30am, was destroyed.
