Crash sparks gas alert

A COUPLE had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into the wall of their house and smashed a gas pipe.

A white BMW travelling along Miles Street, off Huddersfield Road in Oldham, yesterday afternoon swerved to avoid a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

The male driver of the BMW crashed into a house on the corner of Bower Street and Miles Street.

The Corsa, however, hit a black Audi parked outside the third house from the end of the terrace, pushing it into the wall of the house, leaving a gas pipe exposed. All three cars are believed to have been written off.

The drivers of the BMW and Corsa were taken to hospital as a precaution, with one treated for minor injuries.

National Grid had to switch off the gas at the house and the company also inspected all the houses along the street as a precaution.

The householder, Arthur Crone, said he had only just entered his house shortly before 3pm when the accident happened.

Mr Crone (67) said: “I just heard a loud bang. My wife, Diane, just ran out with the dog because it could smell the gas. We’re just waiting for the gas to come back and reconnect us. It could be turned off all night.

“My wife was shaken, she was just shocked. But she’s all right now.”
