ATHLETIC 1, BARNSLEY 2

ATHLETIC fell to another home defeat as a late Kevin Long goal saw Lee Johnson emerge from his old club with three points – ending an eight-match losing streak.

Conor Hourihane gave Barnsley a first-half lead with a powerful shot and though Adam Hammill and Ivan Toney hit the woodwork, Mark Yeates levelled in a second-half that belonged to the home side.

However, centre-back Kevin Long hit home an 89th-minute goal after blundering defending saw the ball not cleared.

Athletic still have not won at home in the league since the opening month of 2015-16.

Barnsley were the better side from the off, in a game played on a pitch covered in frost.

Adam Hammill rolled a shot against the outside of a post early on and Kevin Long headed over from a set-piece, before Marley Watkins saw a shot blocked on the line by Cameron Dummigan.

Half an hour in Johnson's men held the lead. Hourihane's shot took a deflection on the way into Joel Coleman's top-right-corner.

Mark Yeates had a penalty appeal waved away but the main chance for the home side in the first half came when Barnsley defender Aidy White headed a long ball over his own goalkeeper Adam Davies. The ball travelled a few yards wide of the open goal.

Dummigan went close when playing a give-and-go with Giorgio Rasulo. In on goal, his low shot was well saved by the legs of Davies.

Ivan Toney hit the underside of the crossbar with a free header at the other end and also wasted a chance when shooting wide when well-placed.

That came just before the equaliser on 78 minutes, when Yeates netted for the first time in his Athletic career.

But Barnsley had the final word when Long converted after Simeon Jackson's shot was fumbled by Coleman.
