OLD Men Grooving proved dad dancing is cool when they strutted their stuff at the Oldham Christmas lights switch-on and fireworks display.

The “Britain’s Got Talent” favourites entertained a crowd of thousands who turned up for the event at Tommyfield Market.

Others acts were also a hit including children’s characters Bing and Flop from CBeebies, while Rodney the Reindeer turned on the lights with help from town-centre mascots Ollie and Millie.

Yesterday’s show kicked off with dancers from Saddleworth Drama Centre who performed to a Christmas medley.

Then it was over to Hathershaw singer/songwriter Samm Hewitt, a student at University Campus Oldham.

He performed his self-written single “Stand Tall” which is available on iTunes, with proceeds in aid of Oldham’s Mahdlo youth centre.

“It was brilliant,” said Sam, who also sung the Justin Bieber hit “Mistletoe”.

He added: “It is the biggest crowd I have performed to. I was a bit nervous but it is the first time I have performed one of my own songs and not forgotten the words!”

Performance artist Bruce Airhead had revellers in stitches as he climbed into a giant green balloon. Old Men Grooving also posed for a selfie with the crowd before an appearance from Father Christmas.

The event finished with a fireworks display which got the thumbs up from the Steele family from Shaw, including nine-year-olds Robert and Charlotte.

Mum Caroline said: “It was brilliant. We have come for Bing because Robert is obsessed with him.”
