A SOLICITOR who was the first ethnic-minority president of Oldham Law Association has won an award for her services to law.
Naila Akhtar, a partner at Platt Halpern Solicitors in Union Street, triumphed over nine other nominees at the British Muslim Awards, in Birmingham.
Naila (39), from Rochdale was president of Oldham Law Association in 2014 and a governor at Oldham Sixth Form College for two years. She has lectured at her former university and in Rochdale has offered voluntary legal advice to people otherwise unable to afford it.
Naila said: “I’m overwhelmed. It’s great recognition. It was great to be asked to be president of Oldham Law Association. We should have more people from ethnic minority backgrounds taking an active role in the country.”
