JUNIOR doctors have confirmed they will take industrial action next week after being “left with no alternative” following contract talks.

The British Medical Association said junior doctors will strike from 8am on February 10, providing only emergency care for the 24 hours.

The move follows weeks of discussion between the BMA and the Government on a new contract for junior doctors, who fear a new system would be unfair and potentially unsafe for patients.

The BMA previously suspended plans for two days of industrial action due to start on January 26 on the basis of new progress.

But Dr Johann Malawana, BMA junior doctor committee chairman, said: “It is particularly frustrating the Government is still digging in its heels. We have talked in good faith over the past few months, but have seen no willingness on their part to move on a core issue for junior doctors.

“The Government misrepresents junior doctors as a block to a seven-day NHS, but they already work every day of the week. We are asking that this is reflected in fair and affordable recognition of unsocial hours.”
